More countries have joined the coalition to expand the limits set on iTunes for downloading songs onto your iPod. As reported earlier a consumer watchdog in Norway has deemed iTunes illegal because it doesn’t allow music downmloaded from it to be played on anything else except the iPod.
The Dutch consumer protection agency became the latest in Europe on Thursday to pressure Apple Inc. into changing restrictions that tie songs bought on iTunes to its market-leading iPod players.
“What we want from Apple is that they remove the limitations that prevent you from playing a song you download from iTunes on any player other than an iPod,” van Kouwen said. “When you buy a music CD it doesn‘t play only on players made by Panasonic. People who download a song from iTunes shouldn‘t be bound to an iPod for the rest of their lives.”
Drug addicts who kick their habit are to be rewarded with iPods, televisions and shopping vouchers on the NHS under controversial guidelines unveiled by the Government’s health service rationing watchdog.
Under the drug addict scheme, an estimated 50,000 could be rewarded for trying to quit, receiving vouchers and prizes for providing drug-free urine samples, with the size of the reward increasing with the amount of time spent drug-free.
Drug workers described the proposals as “ridiculous” and warned that it could lead to addicts trading vouchers and prizes to feed their habit. There are also fears that addicts could easily cheat on the urine tests.
David Raynes, of the National Drug Prevention Alliance, said: “Some of this seems ridiculous. Giving people iPods is nonsense. It seems to be on the lunatic fringe of drug thinking.

A consumer watchdog in Norway has deemed iTunes illegal because it doesn’t allow music downmloaded from it to be played on anything else except the iPod.
The decision is the first time any jurisdiction has concluded iTunes breaks its consumer protection laws and could prompt other European countries to review the situation. Torgeir Waterhouse, senior adviser to the Norwegian Consumer Council, who originally launched the complaint, told the Financial Times he was in negotiations with pan-European consumer groups to present a unified position on iTunes’ legality.
“We are satisfied the Federation of German Consumer Organisations and the French UFC Que Choisir are addressing this important issue. It means that iTunes is now being told by more than 100m European consumers to offer them a fair deal,” he said.
Apple didn’t immediatley respond but have said they will be reviewing the situation to make it more clear in its marketing.
