We can confirm that Ofcom are now working with other regulators to draft an EU-wide standard on the use of a gadget which plays the output of Apple’s iPods on FM radios.
Germany and other EU members have recently made it legal to buy and use itrip’s in their country. This in turn means you can now legally buy an itrip in the UK although they are only mean’t to be used in Germany. Under EU law if a product is legal to use in an EU member state that means you can purchase it in any other EU country. Global Sources are quoted as saying that China and Taiwanese manufacturers expect to increase iPod accessory sales to over $104 million this year alone. This would be an increase of 37% from last year. “The iPod phenomenon has created plenty of opportunities for accessory manufacturers. At least 50 new suppliers are ready to begin production this year in Taiwan and mainland China alone,” said Global Sources’ report publisher Mark Saunderson.
It now seems that after all the rumours Apple are finally developing an iPod phone. According to the Nihom Keizai Shimbun Japanese newspaper Softbank president Masayoshi Son and Steve Jobs met earlier this and agreed a deal to develop the device. The report suggest that the phone would be a 3G model with Music playing features and high speed web connectivity. Analysts expect the phone to Launch in Japan this year then the rest of the world after that.
UK-based iPod accessory maker GEAR4 has announced the CruiseControl, an RF remote control for iPods. The CruiseControl’s receiver works with any iPod with a dock connector port, has a headphone amp and port on the bottom, and provides a range of up to 160 feet. The remote control comes with a lanyard and has seven functions, including shuffle and repeat buttons, normal pause/play, volume and fwd/back buttons. The CruiseControl sells for £24.99 (about $47).
